We understand why you're here

You're carrying the whole education on your own. You don't have to carry the teaching.

More than 111,700 children in England are now educated at home — and the most common reason families give is their child's mental health. Many of you arrived here because school stopped working: the anxiety, the SEND needs that weren't met, the mornings that became a battle.

Home education gives your child the calm and flexibility they needed. But it also puts the whole weight on you — the curriculum, the resources, the exams, and the hardest question of all: if you bring in online help, can you trust who is teaching your child? Most online tuition is completely unregulated.

  • That's exactly the gap Academy fills. A real, full timetable, taught live by qualified teachers — so your child keeps learning a proper curriculum.
  • Inspected, not improvised. We are Ofsted-registered and DfE-accredited, with a published report — the assurance an ad-hoc tutor simply can't give you.
  • You stay in charge. You remain the home educator. We're the teaching team you bring in — as much or as little as you choose.

What is Academy & how it works

An online school day, built around your child.

Academy isn't a worksheet portal or an hour with a tutor. It's a live, timetabled school day — small classes, real teachers, a proper curriculum — that your child joins from home, in a calm space, at a pace that works for them.

1

You tell us about your child

Year group, the subjects you want, how they're feeling about learning, and any SEND or EHCP needs. One short form — no school paperwork.

2

We build the timetable

Live lessons each week in small groups, taught by qualified subject teachers using best-in-class pedagogy from the UK, USA and Asia.

3

Your child logs in & learns

They join real classes from home in our virtual classroom — cameras optional, support always on. Every lesson is recorded and reviewed.

4

You see the progress

Half-termly reports benchmarked to age-related expectations, plus a path to GCSEs and Functional Skills when your child is ready.

“Teachers' subject expertise and their effective use of assessment information ensure that each pupil receives carefully tailored, individualised teaching.”Ofsted · Purple Ruler inspection report, 2025

Made for families like yours

Everything home education needs — without the isolation.

🧠

Structure and flexibility

A real routine and a full curriculum, delivered in a calm, low-pressure way. Cameras are optional and the pace bends to your child, not the other way round.

💖

Gentle with anxiety & EBSA

Built for children who found school overwhelming. A “calm and nurturing online environment” (Ofsted) where teachers rebuild confidence first, then learning.

🎓

A genuine strength in SEND

Ofsted called our support for pupils with SEND “a significant strength”. Teaching is tailored to how your child learns — EHCP, SEND support or no diagnosis at all.

👥

Small live classes, real classmates

Your child learns alongside other young people in small groups — the social side of school, without the crowded corridors.

📊

Progress you can see

Half-termly reports against age-related expectations, plus an after-class check-in every lesson — so you always know how it's going.

🏆

A clear route to exams

When your child is ready, we prepare and enter them for GCSEs and Functional Skills, aligned to the right exam boards.

A real week, not a vague promise

Choose the rhythm that fits your family.

Every child joins a set weekly timetable — the structure that helps anxious and home-educated learners thrive. You pick the schedule that suits your household (an earlier or later start, a lighter or fuller week); our team sets the exact lesson times within it. Tap a schedule to see a sample week.

TimeMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday
You choose the schedule, not the clock. These are example weeks to show the shape of the day — earlier mornings for early risers, gentle late starts for children who struggle with mornings, and fuller weeks with languages and humanities. Exact lesson times are confirmed when your child is placed, and every lesson is recorded so nothing is ever missed.
Inspected and assured

The peace of mind a private tutor can't offer.

This is the part that matters most when you're inviting teaching into your home. Purple Ruler is registered with the Department for Education and inspected by Ofsted — with a published report you can read in full.

“Teachers make effective use of technology to bring learning to life.”

Every lesson is taught by an enhanced-DBS teacher, recorded and reviewed within 24 hours. There's a dedicated safeguarding@purpleruler.com and an anonymous “Report a Concern” link in every email we send you.

After you enrol

Settling in is simple — we guide you every step.

No complicated set-up and no jargon. Once your child has a place, everything you need arrives by email, and the first lesson is a single tap away.

📧

1 · Your welcome email

Your child's username and password, the Student Handbook, their timetable and start date — all in one place, as soon as they're enrolled.

🔔

2 · A reminder the day before

A friendly note with the login details, how to log in, and a quick overview of what their very first lesson will cover.

📱

3 · A join link 30 minutes before

One tap to join, sent to both you and your child before every lesson — so nobody ever has to hunt for a link.

Logging in is easy. Go to purpleruler.com → Log inLog in with email, and use the details from your welcome email. The dashboard shows your child's timetable, and each lesson opens at its set time. If your child's usual teacher is ever away, we email you in advance to say a specialist is covering — and you're free to skip that single lesson if you'd rather.
“Coming often, even a little at a time, makes the biggest difference.” Many children start with just a few lessons and build up at their own pace — that's completely normal and we expect it. Planned absences won't count against your child as long as you let us know early.

Your questions, answered

Home-educating families ask us…

Do we stay home educators, or does this change our EHE status?

You stay the home educator. Academy is a teaching service you choose to bring in — you decide how many subjects and hours. You remain responsible for your child's education in the eyes of the law; we simply deliver the teaching you'd otherwise have to arrange yourself.

Is Purple Ruler really inspected and safe?

Yes. We're registered with the Department for Education (URN 152279) and inspected by Ofsted, who found we meet all the standards for online education. Teachers hold enhanced DBS checks, every lesson is recorded and reviewed, and there's same-day safeguarding escalation. You can read the full published report online.

What does it cost, and can our local authority pay?

The core timetable (English, Maths, Science) is £139 a week per child; adding PSHE, PE and Careers is £169 a week; a fully custom timetable is priced on application. Many families fund a place themselves, and some are funded by their local authority — if you think your LA might support a place, tell us on the form or on a call and we'll help.

My child has anxiety / an EHCP / SEND. Is this right for them?

Very likely yes — it's who Academy was built for. Ofsted singled out our SEND support as “a significant strength,” with “carefully tailored, individualised teaching.” Cameras are optional, classes are small, and teachers focus on rebuilding confidence. Tell us about your child and we'll make sure it's a good fit before you commit.

Will my child take GCSEs?

Yes, when they're ready. We prepare and enter pupils for GCSEs and Functional Skills aligned to the appropriate exam boards, and our half-termly reports track progress towards them along the way.

What about making friends and socialising?

Lessons are taught live in small groups, so your child learns alongside other young people rather than alone — the social side of a classroom, in a gentler setting. Many families pair Academy with their own home-ed meet-ups and activities.

Can we try it before committing?

Absolutely. Every family starts with a free one-week trial — real lessons, no obligation — so you and your child can see how it feels before you decide.
